Area plant cuts jobs, another creates more

By Scott Harvey

Sulphur Springs – Just one day after a Sulphur Springs Plant announces its closing; another Hopkins County business opens the doors to its new expansion project, creating an additional 60 jobs.

Owens Country Sausage said Thursday they've successfully added 50,000 square feet to its facility. The expansion project began about a year ago, now production on the business' meat products can begin next week. The expansion was created with the future in mind, meaning more jobs will become available over the next several years.

Earlier this week, 41 workers at the Dairy Farmers of America facility in Sulphur Springs were notified the plant would be closing at the end of the month.

Fortunaltey, a majority of those workers will be transferred to the company's Winnsboro facility, according to DFA Spokeswoman Christi Bell. Bell also says that a few workers have opted for early retirement, while only a few others will actually lose their jobs and receive a severance package.
