Audie Murphy Days kicks off this weekend

By Brad Kellar

Greenville – An American hero will be honored once again in Greenville beginning today.

The annual two-day Audie Murphy Days celebrates the most decorated soldier of World War II, as well as military veterans and those currently serving our country.

Murphy, a native son of Hunt County, was also a Hollywood film star and accomplished songwriter. He died during a plane crash in Virginia in 1971.

Each year, one weekend is set aside in Greenville for an event dedicated not only to Murphy's memory, but for all veterans.

This year's event features guest speakers with stories of Hollywood and war, and an exhibition of horse cavalry.

Friday's festivities get underway at 9 a.m., with activities slated to begin at 1 p.m. Saturday.
