Autopsy results pending for slain Sulphur Springs woman

By Scott Harvey

Sulphur Springs – Authorities continue to await autopsy results of an elderly woman, killed by her grandson last month in Sulphur Springs.

Jerry Chadwick Clayton remains in custody at the Hopkins County Jail on a charge of first-degree murder in lieu of $1 million bond. An initial investigation indicated blunt force trauma to the head to be the cause of death, but an autopsy was ordered to determine the exact cause. Lead Investigator Rusty Stillwagoner tells KETR he expects results of the autopsy to not be final for at least another month.

The crime is alleged to have occurred at his grandmother's home in the 1000 block of Como Street.

Clayton is said to have arrived at the Police Department on Saturday, January 17, telling patrol officers that he'd been assaulted. Officers noted that Clayton had blood on his clothes. When asked again, he said his grandmother had been assaulted and needed medical attention. Upon further questioning, Clayton eventually confessed.

The crime is was first homicide reported in Sulphur Springs since 2005.
