Autopsy results show violent death for child

By Brad Kellar

Greenville – Meanwhile, documents filed in the capital murder case against Gabriela Ortiz and Arturo Aguilar Vega Jr. of Campbell show both admitting to having caused injuries to Herrera prior to his death.

The Hunt County Sheriff's Office issued a statement Thursday, indicating the preliminary autopsy results from the Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office show the case of Herrera's death as "Homicidal Violence including blunt trauma."

Herrera, who would have turned 3 on Aug. 6, was laid to rest Thursday after he was reported to have died Sunday.

Ortiz and Vega called 911 that morning to say the child, who was in their care at the time, had stopped breathing. Emergency medical personnel and Hunt County Sheriff's investigators discovered Herrera in the back of the couple's car on the FM 513 overpass as they attempted to drive him to a hospital in Greenville, only to determine Herrera had been dead for some time.

Ortiz and Vega remain in custody at the Hunt County Jail charged with capital murder, each in lieu of $2 million bond.
