Ban approved on cell phones in Greenville school zones

By Brad Kellar

Greenville – The Greenville City Council has elected to ban the use of cell phones in school zones.

Tuesday night's vote prohibits talking, tweeting or texting on hand-held mobile phones while in the zones beginning next Friday. The measure is designed to comply with a new state law, House Bill 55, passed by the Texas Legislature earlier this year.

The new rules only will apply during those hours when school zones are in effect. Drivers would be allowed the use of a hand-held device in an emergency. Hands free devices will also be permitted.

Violators of the ordinance could be subject to a $500 fine.
