City of Greenville officials should have an idea by this time next week as to how much it will cost to build miles of new sidewalks.
The Safe Routes to Schools initiative is an effort is designed to build more than 15 miles of sidewalks and related improvements in Greenville.
Bids from contractors interested in working on the project will be accepted by the City of Greenville through the afternoon of next Thursday, July 11.
The City of Greenville received a $1.87 million grant from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) for the Safe Routes to School Infrastructure program, with the grant funding going to pay for the work at Bowie, Carver, Crockett and Lamar elementary schools.
The project is expected to provide approximately 80,000 linear feet (15.15 miles) of new sidewalks, repairs to existing sidewalks, curb cuts for ramps, the construction of curbs and gutters, crossings, traffic control devices and drainage.
The improvements are designed to help encourage more children to walk or ride bikes to and from the schools.
