Bond hearing today in Jan. shooting case

A state district judge will decide this week whether a local man, facing multiple charges in connection with a reported Jan. 15 robbery/shooting at a Greenville residence, will receive a reduction in his almost $1 million in bonds.

Christopher Steven Martin of Greenville has also been charges in connection with a Jan. 2 incident at another local residence.

Martin, 31, remains in custody at the Hunt County Jail in lieu of a total of $985,000 in bonds. Martin has had an attorney appointed to represent him, who has requested an evidentiary hearing before the 196th District Court, to determine whether Martin’s bonds should be lowered. The hearing is scheduled at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Martin was arrested on the afternoon of Jan. 15 by the Cumby Police Department for evading in a motor vehicle. Martin was being sought for questioning following the shooting in the 2500 block of Broadview earlier in the day.

Martin had been identified by the Greenville Police Department as one of the active participants in the shooting and was charged with five counts of aggravated robbery and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, with $535,000 in bonds set on the charges.

Martin is the same individual who was charged with three counts of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and one count of disorderly conduct-abusive language in connection with a shots fired call incident in the 1200 block of Walworth Street on Jan. 2. Martin had been freed from custody after posting $75,500 bond.

Upon learning of the Jan. 15 incident, the Hunt County District Attorney’s Office moved to declare Martin’s original bonds on the firearms possession charges insufficient. The bonds were raised to $150,000 each on the charges.
