Bonham animal shelter discussions continue

By Scott Harvey

Bonham – The study of a new animal shelter in Bonham continues, as city leaders calculate an estimated cost and building size.

The city was forced to go the project alone, after Fannin County Commissioners recently announced that a countywide facility would not be possible due to a lack of funding.

Therefore, a citywide proposal is in the works, and according to Police Chief Mike Bankston, a 40' by 26' insulated building would cost just over $45,000 to build. It would consist of concrete blocks and a metal roof, and would cost no more than $18,000 a year to maintain. The city spends $11,000 a year in upkeep on their currently facility.

Council this week tabled an agenda item to move forward on the project until a more thorough study can be conducted.
