Bonham Purple Warriors: 2013 football preview

txhshelmetproject.com

Bonham High School enters the 2012 football season with veteran leadership, but roster depth could be an issue for the Purple Warriors.

“We’re a 3A school at 1A numbers,” said head coach Cody Bounds, who said at the beginning of this season’s practices that his roster stood at around “63-65” players.

The good news for Bonham is that on offense, the trio of quarterback Dra Smith (6-2, 185), running back Tristin Hunt (5-9, 155) and wide receiver Greg Moses (6-1, 170) will be back. Jacob Kemp, featured in the defensive secondary, could also get some touches at running back. The Warriors will also get the ball to tight end Kendall Kennedy (6-1, 180) in the team’s multiple offense, which will include some two-back, wing-T and option sets.

“We’re experienced offensively,” Bounds said. “Depth is our big concern.”

Defensively, Ron Jasterzenski anchors a line that will have to react quickly against the explosive offenses of district opponents Princeton, Melissa and Anna. The secondary looks solid, with defensive back Chase Bardwell lining up along with Kemp, but an unheralded crew of linebackers will need to step up in order for Bonham to battle for the district title.

The non-district schedule will challenge Bonham as well.

“Overall, the schedule is probably one of the toughest I’ve had as a coach,” Bounds said. “If we stay healthy through non-district, that will get us battle-tested for district.”

Head coach: Cody Bounds. 2012 record: 3-8, 2-2, bi-district finalist. Top players: QB Dra Smith, Sr.; WR Greg Moses, Sr.; DB Jacob Kemp, Sr.; LB Kenton Manis, Jr.; OL Caleb Hill, Jr.; OL Cameron Patton, Sr.
