Bootleggers busted

By Kevin Jefferies

Greenville – An illegal alcohol operation has been shut down in Greenville. 535 containers of beer and hundreds of paper and plastic bags were seized Saturday from a home in the 2200 block of Wellington Street. Hunt County Warrant Officer Joe Knight said that surveillance was increased on the residence after a tip led authorities there. Officers were able to observe the exchange of money for a box that contained an alcoholic beverage. The operation had been making alcohol available to minors.

The tip in the case was generated by publicity of the Have a Sober New year program. The program has brought together law enforcement agencies from all over the area, as well as church groups and civic organizations. The goals of the program are to stop teenage drinking, provide alcohol and drug free environments for teens on New Year's Eve, and to stop DWIs.
