Campbell man pleads guilty to wife's murder

By Brad Kellar

Campbell – A Hunt County man has pleaded guilty to murder in connection with the shooting death of his wife.

31-year-old James Ray Brown Jr. entered an open plea of guilty Tuesday to one count of murder for the death of 28-year-old Avis Baker Brown. The incident occurred on October 18, 2008 at the couple's home near Campbell.

Brown reportedly told investigators he had heard someone breaking into the home and shot Avis Brown, mistaking her for an intruder. However, the couple's 8-year-old son told investigators the shooting occurred following a dispute between the two.

A jury trial in the case had been scheduled to begin Monday. Brown is facing a maximum sentence of from five to 99 years to life in prison.
