While facing charges of sexual assault, Celeste Police Chief Roger Eugene Mueller III has died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot.

According to the Greenville Herald-Banner, police got a call of a gunshot victim at Mueller's home at around 7:45 p.m. Monday night. He was transported to Hunt Regional Medical Center in Greenville, where he died shortly after.

Hunt County Sheriff Randy Meeks tells the Herald-Banner that Texas Rangers have taken over the investigation.

Mueller was indicted on charges of sexual assault of a child after being accused of touching the breasts of a girl of less than 17 years of age on June 1.,  2012, and on May 30. If convicted, Mueller would've faced two to 20 years in prison for each charge.
