Chamber eliminates tourism director position

The Greenville Chamber of Commerce has made another key change in its management team.

Melva Hill, chairman of the Chamber’s board of directors, announced Tuesday that the Tourism Director position has been dissolved, effective immediately.

Hill said the decision was based on the Greenville City Council voting in June to cut funding raised by hotel/motel taxes to the Chamber. Hill said the position, which had been filled by Milton Babb, had not been budgeted for 2014-15.

As of the start of the fiscal year on October 1, the City of Greenville has responsibility for promoting tourism in the city, with the duties split among Kimber Patterson, who serves as the Acting Director of Parks and Recreation and Venue Manager for Greenville Municipal Auditorium; Main Street Manager Doyle Dick and Public Relations Liaison Autumn Barton.

It is the second personnel announcement from the Chamber in the past two weeks.

Brendon Payne resigned as the Chamber’s CEO and President September 30. Hill said at the time that the Chamber would be looking to hire an interim director.

An announcement concerning the position had not been released as of Tuesday.
