Check thieves in Bonham

By Kevin Jefferies

Bonham – Bonham Police are offering a reward for any information regarding the theft of mail in north Bonham. Thieves have been hitting mailboxes looking for outgoing checks meant to pay bills. The thieves are taking the checks and changing the payee and amounts, then attempting to cash the checks at local banks.

Victims are usually unaware that the checks have been stolen until they are contacted by police or they receive letters of late payment from creditors. At least 15 incidents of mail theft have been reported to police.

Bonham Police say the suspects drive a mid-size gray or silver 4-door vehicle, and urge citizens to contact police if they see such a vehicle prowling their neighborhoods. A $300 reward is offered for any information leading to indictment of the thieves.
