Child nearly drowns, life still in danger

By Scott Harvey

Sulphur Springs – Sulphur Springs police are investigating the near drowning of a six-year-old boy, currently in serious condition at Children's Medical Center in Dallas.

"I hadn't heard anything since this morning," says Sulphur Springs Police Chief Jim Bayuk. "I heard he was breathing on his own, but still not out of the woods."

Caleb Ryan Smith was pulled from the bottom of City Pool Tuesday afternoon, and immediately given CPR. After being taken to Memorial Hospital Caleb was placed on a ventilator and flown to Children's hospital.

Caleb was one of a number of children from two different daycare centers receiving swim lessons that day, according to Chief Jim Bayuk. The lessons were believed to be private and closed off the public. It was unclear how many lifeguards were on duty at the time of the incident.

Detective Sergeant David Gilmore has been assigned to investigate the scene.
