Commerce – Law enforcement in Commerce is partnering to bring the Choices Program to high school and university students.
Beginning Friday at 10 a.m., Parking Lot F on the A&M-Commerce campus at the corner of Stonewall and Campbell will be transformed into a DWI crash scene consisting of victims, a drunk driver and cars. The program will focus on the consequences and choices that teens and young adults have when it comes to driving under the influence.
Afterwards, students will hear from police and fire officials, the Justice of the Peace and Municipal Judge. Stephanie Sutherland, College of Education and Human Services mentor at A&M-Commerce, will also address participants. Sutherland's father was killed in a crash with a person under the influence of drugs. Those presentations begin at 11:30 a.m. in Ferguson Auditorium.
From 10-2 p.m. in Parking Lot E participants will have the opportunity to drive a golf cart while wearing "intoxicated" goggles to better demonstrate the danger.
The event is geared towards high school and college students but will be open to the public.
