City of Ladonia to conduct smoke testing

Ladonia City Hall
Ladonia City Hall

LADONIA - AttentionLadonia citizens: If you notice smoke spewing from your sewer line anytime over the next few weeks, don’t be alarmed.

Smoke testing of the city’s sanitary sewer system will begin on Wednesday, May 23 and run through Friday, June 8.  Testing will begin on the West side of town, progress eastward, and will be performed between 7:30 am and 5 pm.

The test involves pumping large amounts of white non-toxic smoke into the sanitary sewer lines to check for leaks anywhere in the system.

According to the city, the smoke is not harmful to living things, leaves no residue, and is not a fire hazard. The smoke will be noticeable anywhere there is a leak in a sewer pipe, such as a cross connection to a storm sewer or a defective or damaged manhole or cleanout.  Smoke may also exit from vent pipes on roofs of homes.

Smoke in homes would suggest that gases from the sewer system could also be entering the home, and might indicate defective plumbing or drain traps.  To help prevent smoke entering homes, residents should pour one gallon of water into any seldom-used drains.  Residents should contact a plumber if smoke is observed inside a home.

For further information or questions, please contact City Hall at 903-367-7011.
