City moves forward on possible multipurpose center

By Scott Harvey

Commerce – The Commerce City Council has appointed a 12 team task force to explore the possibility of developing a multi-purpose facility in town.

The team will now spend the next several months gathering information and gauging public interest in constructing a combination recreation center, public library and new swimming pool.

Interim City Manager Marc Clayton says there's a good chance it would require the sale of bonds and therefore voter approval. The earliest such an item could get on a ballot is most likely next May, according to Clayton. Grants and other funding options would be explored as well.

A recreation center was in the City's 2000 Master Plan but never went to vote. The City hopes the facility would bring additional revenue and citizens to Commerce.

Also Tuesday, Council gave authority for crews to move forward on the sidewalk replacement across from City Hall.

A section of sidewalk will be redone to include new steps, removal of existing retaining wall and construction of new concrete retaining walls, a two-level handicap ramp and the resetting of existing light fixtures.

Work will be done on both the north and south sides, or the sides facing Alamo and Main St, at a total estimated cost of $66,707. Some of those funds will come from remaining HUD (Housing and Urban Development) funds.

The project will be complete by September.
