City reveals pool season plans
Provided there are enough lifeguards available, plans call for the Ja-Lu Municipal Swimming Pool in Greenville to open for the summer with a free swim day on Saturday, June 7.
But as of Friday, the Greenville Parks and Recreation Department was still reporting a shortage of lifeguards for the pool.
City of Greenville Public Relations Liaison Autumn Barton said the pool’s free “Splash Day” was moved back a week in order to have more time to recruit the necessary personnel.
“We are hoping we get all that we need,” Barton said. “Hopefully by then, we’ll have enough.”
Acting Parks and Recreation Director Kimber Patterson has said she will be forced to make a difficult decision by May 9 as to whether to shorten the hours the pool operates, or not to open the pool at all this summer.
But, assuming that sufficient staff can be found, the Ja-Lu Swimming Pool will officially open for the season from 1 – 7 p.m. June 7, with free admission.
The regular daily admission price will be $5 for adults 18 and over and $4 for youth, with a pool pass punch card offering 10 visits for $30. Children under 3 are admitted at no charge.
The Greenville Parks and Recreation Department will begin accepting reservations for pool parties and swim lessons starting at 8 a.m., Friday, May 16. Party reservations and swim lesson registration may be made at the Greenville Municipal Auditorium Building, 2821 Washington Street, or online at www.inparksweplay.com.
Payments must be paid in full at the time of the reservation and reservations are taken on a first come, first served basis. Rental and registration fees must be paid in full at the time of reservation. Cash, checks and credit cards are accepted.
Private party reservations may be made for 7 – 9 p.m., Fridays – Sundays from June 7 – August 9. The fee is $140 per hour and there is a two hour limit for all party rentals. The rental fee includes as many lifeguards as necessary to oversee the party.
New this season, birthdays and special occasions may not be celebrated during public pool hours, as well. The Ja-Lu Pool Pavilion may be reserved for parties between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., Tuesdays – Sundays. The $30 fee includes a pavilion with picnic tables in two hour increments. Pool admission is required in addition to the rental fee. Rental time includes set-up and clean-up.
Also on May 16, parents may begin registering their children for the Greenville Parks and Recreation Learn-To-Swim courses. Learn-To-Swim courses are $40 per person for all age groups.
The pool will close for the season on Sunday, August 10.
