Locals are passing around responsibility for the facility until a permanent arrangement is made.
This week, the Delta County Commissioners Court heard Treasurer Bonnie Hobbs’ request for an appointment of a manager to the Civic Center. She and her husband Monty have been maintaining it for several years. Precinct 3 Commissioner Wayne Poole agreed to temporarily maintain it until another solution can be found.
In other Delta County business:
Chief Deputy Donnie Willingham (who will officially begin work on March 1) voluntarily stepped in to approach the Court with the 8th Judicial District inter-local law enforcement agreement. The agreement will allow arrests and work by Hopkins Sheriff Department and the City of Sulphur Springs to be legal and binding.
Judge Brookshire informed the Court the County is being sued by John Mark Wheeler. Wheeler, a convicted felon, alleged claims the Delta County Sheriff’s Office (under the former administration of Sheriff Gerald Teague and Chief Deputy Jim Lewman) seized his home on Highway 64 taking guns while the warrant had the incorrect address. Attorney Garrett is handling the situation.
The Court meets again on Mon., March 11.
