Commerce budget to be addressed

By Scott Harvey

Commerce – The City of Commerce is scheduled to discuss its budget tomorrow. Proposed is a property tax rate of 82 cents per $100 valuation, an increase of six cents.

Although the rate is higher than last year, the city is not required to conduct a public hearing, as the proposed rate does not exceed the effective rate.

The rate, if approved, would include a $700 pay raise for city employees.

Commerce Mayor Quay Throgmorton says the proposed budget does not address needs such as street maintenance. Officials say the 2010-2011 budget maintains the same amount of city services despite several cuts, plus show as projected surplus.

Tuesday's meeting begins at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
