Commerce Elementary receives grant for literacy programs

By Kevin Jefferies

Commerce – Commerce Elementary School has received a $25,000 grant aimed at building family literacy programs. First Lady Laura Bush is at the front of the Families and Children Together, or FACT, program as part of the First Lady's Family Literacy Initiative for Texas. Funds will go to help build literacy programs for young children, but will also build such program for families and parents. English as a second language programs and opportunities to earn a GED or high school diploma for parents will be funded with the grant. The goal of the program is to allow parents, as well as their children, to build skills by learning together.

Commerce Elementary is one of only ten schools in Texas to receive the grant.
