Commerce football results

By Kevin Jefferies

Commerce –
COMMERCE TIGERS

The Commerce Tigers rolled to a 20-7 win over the Rains Wildcats for Homecoming Friday. Quarterback Zack Boles went 10 of 15 for 181 yards and a touchdown in the victory that brought both teams to 1-1 district records. Boles also added a key stop defensively on fourth down as the Wildcats made a late push in the game to try to even the score. LaQuinn Blakely returned an interception for a touchdown and Travis Burnett added a 45 yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. Emory was forced out of a successful ball-control offense by the Tigers and had to go to a passing game that saw key receiver and defensive back Aaron Potts leave early to an injury. Potts later returned but did not play.

The win snaps a three game losing streak for the Tigers, and brings them to a 4-3 record overall and a 1-1 district record. Commerce is on the road this week facing the Winnsboro Red Raiders.

A&M-COMMERCE LIONS

The A&M-Commerce Lions lost in the final minutes of their match against Southeastern Oklahoma 24-23. The Lions took the lead late in the game but a field goal with 2:10 left put Southeastern on top. The Savages then recovered the ensuing kick-off and held the ball to take the victory from a stunned Lions team. A&M-Commerce goes to 3-4 on the season and 2-1 in conference play. It's Homecoming for the Lions this week as they host Northeastern State.
