Commerce Head Coach resigns

By Kevin Jefferies

Commerce – Commerce High School Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Bill Draughn is stepping down. Draughn turned in his resignation to the Commerce Board of Trustees yesterday. His resignation becomes effective at the end of the school year.

Draughn posted a 15-16 record in three years as head coach for the Commerce Tigers. He saw post season appearances in his first two years, but missed the playoffs this season, ending a 15 year playoff streak for the Tigers. Prior to that, he served as defensive coordinator for three Tigers state championship teams. He is also a Commerce High alum, graduating in 1980.

Draughn said his win-loss record didn't factor into his decision to resign as head coach. He plans to remains in Commerce teaching history and wishes to spend more time with his family.
