Commerce High volleyball <BR>wins bi-district

By Bill Oliver

Greenville, TX –

No one could have played any harder or any longer, as the Commerce High School volleyball team won its first ever post-season match. The Tigers defeated in a grueling 2 1/2-hour, 5-game match Tuesday night in Greenville.

In the first three games of the match, the team who scored first never lost the lead and won. Bonham won the first two games 25-20 and 25-15 and the Tigers captured game three 25-17.

The fourth and fifth games provided the highest drama. In game four, Bonham had Commerce on the brink of elimination, leading 18-14. The Tigers rallied, scoring six of the next eight points to get to a 20-20 tie. Five lead changes and three ties later, Commerce pulled out a 28-26 win to even the match at two games each.

The fifth game, which is supposed to go to the first team who scores 15 and wins by two, featured 13 ties and 8 lead changes before Commerce won the deciding game 19 to 17.

The Tigers, with a season record of 34-6, advance to the 3A area championship Friday night at 7 on the northwest side of Fort Worth at River Oaks-Castleberry.
