Commerce ISD seeks Hall of Honor nominations

Commerce – The Commerce ISD Hall of Honor selection committee has begun seeking nominations for its second class of inductees.

Instituted to recognize former CISD and Norris School students who have had distinguished careers and staff who have made a significant impact on students, the CISD Hall of Honor will strengthen and acknowledge the heritage associated with Commerce schools, according to Superintendent Blake Cooper.

Last year, CISD recognized four former students and staff members during a homecoming celebration which included a recognition reception and luncheon and special activities at during the homecoming football game. Honored were Harry Champion, June Moore Dunn, Dr. Jack Pirkey and Emmett Day Sr.

"It's important that we recognize former students and staff, not only to applaud their success and thank them for their contributions, but also to use their success as an example for our current students," CISD Superintendent Blake Cooper said.

Inductees will be honored during a slate of activities which will be held in conjunction with next fall's Commerce High School homecoming football game October 7. Honorees and their families will be guests at an induction ceremony and luncheon and honorees will also be recognized as honorary captains at the coin flip prior to the football game.

To qualify for the honor former CISD or Norris School students must be out of high school at least 10 years and possess good character throughout their lives. They will be expected to attend the induction festivities. If deceased, the honoree's family will be expected to attend.

Staff members who are nominated for the honor must have been employed by CISD or Norris School for at least four years and should have exhibited good character throughout their lives. They must also attend the induction activities.

Honorees will receive an individual plaque and an embroidered blanket. Their names will also be placed on permanent display in the CISD Administration Building.

Each year, at least three, not more than five, former students and staff will be recognized.
The selection committee, selected by the superintendent and two community members, will remain anonymous and must be members of the community for ten or more years.

Nomination forms are available online at www.commerceisd.org or can be picked up at the CISD Administration Building at 3315 Washington Street. Deadline for nominations is May 13.
