Commerce officer injured

Commerce – An incident in the 600 block of North Neal Street in Commerce last night left one police officer injured when he was hit by the vehicle of a subject attempting to flee. Commerce Police received a report around 10:15 last night of a disturbance on North Neal involving weapons. As police arrived, a black male was entering a vehicle in front of the residence and refused to cooperate when officers instructed he exit the vehicle. Police then attempted to remove the man from the vehicle using pepper spray to gain control of the situation.

During the altercation, the man was able to start the car and accelerated, striking a Commerce Officer in the lower legs. Another officer pulled his gun and fired two shots at the rear tire of the vehicle in an attempt too prevent further injury to the downed officer. It was then that the suspect was able to momentarily flee, but was quickly apprehended by the police.

The officer struck by the vehicle was transported to Presbyterian of Commerce and later released with minor injuries. The suspect is being charged with Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer by Use of a Deadly Weapon and his name is being withheld pending arraignment. The circumstances of the original call to police are still under investigation.
