Commerce officer ok after being struck by vehicle

By Kevin Jefferies

Commerce – A Commerce Police Officer is recovering after being hit by a car Wednesday night. The incident began with a call to police of a disturbance involving weapons in the 600 block of North Neal in Commerce. When police arrived, they found a black male entering a vehicle and then refusing to leave the vehicle when asked by police. When police tried to remove the man, he was able to start the vehicle. He then accelerated into a Commerce police officer, knocking him down. Another officer fired shots at the rear tires of the vehicle to prevent other injury.

The 23 year old man is being charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer and evading arrest. His identity has not been released.

The officer that was struck was treated at Presbyterian of Commerce and released. He was up and around Thursday with soreness and bruising to his lower legs.
