Counterfeit money has been showing up at businesses in Commerce.
The Commerce Police Department said Friday that counterfeit $5, $10 and $20 bills have been received by Commerce banks and merchants.
A simple check against back-light shows that the bills are missing the security stripe and watermarks on actual currency, police said. One is able to quickly tell if it is a counterfeited bill by applying a little bit of moisture to it and rubbing, they said. The ink on the bill will run, police said.
Police said that merchants and consumers should watch for the fake bills and report any counterfeit money to law enforcement.
