Commerce Recycling Continues to Flourish

COMMERCE - The demand for recycling services in Commerce is increasing each month, according to volunteer Anne Mills.

“We had a record turnout [Saturday] and were full to the gills at 11 a.m. Turned away at least 10 very full vehicles while I was trying to put up our ‘sorry we are full’ signs,” Mills said.

The program is now in its ninth month, following a 2011 agreement between the City of Commerce, Keep Commerce Beautiful and City Sanitation. A large portion of materials come from local businesses during the week, while citizens can drop off items on the first Saturday of every month.

“If folks need to recycle and missed getting there before we were full they can call 903-886-6710 or 903-886-6792 to schedule a time to meet us once the container is emptied this week.”

The recycling bin is located at the City Wastewater Plant on FM 3218 or Bus Barn Road.  Non-residents can go to Commerce City Hall and purchase a permit to recycle for $10 annually.

Here’s a list of acceptable and non-acceptable items.

Next month, citizens wishing to drop off items are encouraged to arrive early, as the bin will only be open from 9 to 11:30 a.m., or until full, on Saturday, August 4.

Mills is also asking for additional volunteer assistance. Those interested can contact the above numbers for details.
