Commerce resident killed in Sunday accident

By Scott Harvey

Commerce – A long-time Commerce resident was found dead Sunday in what's been determined accidental death by mechanical asphyxia.

Officers were called to a residence in the 700 block of Harrison Street to perform a welfare check when they found 85-year-old Calogero Gibaldi beneath a collapsed awning.

An investigation would lead authorities to believe Gibaldi was working on his awning and unable to control it as he was taking it down. The awning then slid down, knocking Gibaldi to the ground and landed on top of him; too heavy to move off.

The Dallas County Medical Examiner's office would confirm the accidental death.

Gibaldi was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Hershey Barnett of Quinlan.
