By Kevin Jefferies

Commerce – Five people have filed for open spots on the Commerce School Board for the May 13th election, and one person has filed for one of three open spots on the Commerce City Council.

For school board, Donna Tavener has filed for the unexpired term of Sarah Sienty in Place 2. Mary Hendrix was appointed to serve in the position after Sienty died last year, but will not be running for the remaining year of the term.

Incumbent Debbie Akin has filed for re-election in Place 6. Former CISD teacher Kay Townsend will be running against Aikin.

Medley Wilson will be running against Robert Rabb and incumbent Mitchell Scott for Place 7. Candidates have until March 7th to file for the Place 2, and until March 13th to file for Places 6 and 7.

Mayor Sheryl Zelhart will be running for Mayor again, and is the only person so far to file for open spots on the Commerce City Council. Place 2, held by John Sands, and Place 4, held by Kay Sanders are also up for election. Filing for city council continues through March 13th.

Early voting for both elections will begin May 1st at Commerce City Hall. The May 13th election will take place at Commerce Middle School.
