Commerce seeking Safe Routes to Schools grant

By Scott Harvey

Commerce – The City of Commerce has elected to pursue a grant for the Safe Routes to Schools Program to provide proper school accessibility for students.

To be eligible for the grant, the city and school district are required to submit a sidewalk plan to TxDot.

On Tuesday council hired KSA Engineers from Tyler to help develop the plan by the end of the month at a cost of $5,000. The firm will look at all intermediate campuses within the CISD to determine the proper plan.

The new A.C. Williams Elementary School, located along Culver St., does not currently have any sidewalks in front of it leading to the campus.

The grant, if awarded, has a $750,000 maximum.
