Commissioners to address proposed pipeline

By Scott Harvey

Sulphur Springs – Hopkins County Commissioners are scheduled to meet Tuesday to discuss the TransCanada Keystone Pipeline with the Lion's Club. The session will take place at noon from the Pizza Inn in Sulphur Springs.

TransCanada wants to build a pipeline from Canada through several Northeast and East Texas counties all the way to the Gulf Coast. Part of the pipeline is scheduled to go through Hopkins County Precinct 3.

The line has come under some scrutiny from environmentalists and a group of East Texans, but TransCanada disputes recent findings their quality of its pipeline material, known as tar sands, is more acidic and susceptible to a leak or rupture than conventional crude.
