Commissioners approve displaying motto

Brad Kellar

The Hunt County Commissioners Court made it clear Tuesday exactly whom it trusts.

The commissioners were scheduled to vote on a resolution in support of displaying the national motto, “In God We Trust.”

County Judge John Horn said the idea for adopting the motto came to his attention about a month ago.

“There are several county agencies in Texas which have taken action on this resolution,” Horn explained, adding that the motto would be displayed inside the Commissioners Courtroom.

The commissioners currently meet inside the Auxiliary Courtroom, 2700 Johnson Street, in Greenville.

Horn read the formal resolution, which included a history concerning the motto itself, indicating it “would solemnize public occasions and express confidence in our community.”

Horn said he was in favor of installing the motto in the courtroom.

“I think it is very appropriate,” he said.

Precinct 3 Commissioner Phillip Martin agreed and made the motion to adopt the resolution.

“And thanks for bringing this before the court,” he said.

The measure passed on a unanimous vote of the commissioners present.

Horn said he would be meeting with the county’s maintenance department about an appropriate display.

“I think we will come up with two or three options, and then we will present that to the court before taking any action,” Horn said.
