BONHAM - Bonham ISD officials Tuesday paid tribute to Leonard Gerner, dedicating the high school gym in honor of the longtime educator and coach.
Gerner's career included a stint as principal and coach of four different sports. He served in Ector for 10 years before spending the next 27 in Bonham, where he also served two terms on the Bonham ISD's Education Improvement Council.
A member of the Fannin County Sports Hall of Fame, Gerner was grateful for the recognition.
He tells KXII-TV,“I’m very fortunate that these people love me because they’re a great bunch of people. I respect and love them with all my heart and I can’t do enough for them. They’ve done enough for me.”
The Bonham School Board voted last August to formally dedicate the gym in his honor.
