Community honors fallen Titus County Soldier

By Scott Harvey

Mt. Pleasant – Friends, family and community members gathered over the weekend to celebrate the life of fallen Titus County soldier Chauncey Mays.

Former and current military members were also in attendance at Sunday's memorial, held at Chapel Hill School in Mt. Pleasant.

Mays' brother, Cheyenne, tells KLTV-TV, "He made a big difference. He had a big impact on a lot of people's lives. He saved a lot of people's lives."

The 25-year-old Mays, an army staff sergeant from Cookville, was killed last week when his unit was hit with an improvised explosive device (IED) in Afghanistan.

His body is to arrive at Majors Field Municipal Airport in Greenville something this week, followed by a motorcade. He will be buried with full military honors. A date and time for Mays' return had not been announced as of Sunday.
