Community job fair put on hold

By Scott Harvey

Commerce – The Commerce Economic Development Corporation is postponing its Community Job Fair, which was slated for May 19 on the campus of Texas A&M University-Commerce.

The reason for the suspension, according to Director Jennette Burnett, was because of the uncertainty of the H1N1/swine flu outbreak and reluctance of potential employers to participate.

The planning committee will meet back early next month about moving forward with the Job Fair.

Zurn Pex, a company that has been in Commerce for 25 years, will close its plant facility along Highway 11 in Commerce by the end of the month. This action is expected to be permanent. The entire plant facility will be closed between May 10th and May 23rd, 2009, affecting approximately 108 employees.

The job cuts, first announced in March, are blamed on a decline in the home building industry.
