COOPER - The first day on the job for Cooper Elementary School’s new principal is scheduled for Monday.

The district, along with the Delta County Chamber of Commerce, welcomed Dr. Cathy Severns to town during a Business After Hours reception Thursday evening.

Severns, a Texas native but longtime resident of Louisiana, says she’s happy to be back and closer to her family. She’s been the principal for College Oaks Elementary in Lake Charles for the past four years.

Severns earned her Bachelor of Science and Masters of Education from Stephen F. Austin State University and her Ph. D. in Educational Leadership from the University of New Orleans.

Former elementary principal Doug Wicks  has moved to a different administration position that will preside over maintenance and buses, among other duties.

Superintendent Denicia Hohenberger also Thursday addressed those in attendance with her State of the CISD speech. She presented a detailed power point explaining exactly where tax dollars are spent in the District. She gave several reasons why they are in education – she wants every child to be the best they can be so they can go out into the world and be an active, positive member of society.
