Contested races for area hospital board elections

We’ve been reporting this week on the city council and school board races in our region, as Monday marked the filing deadline for the May 12 elections. Filing also came to a close Monday for area hospital board elections, scheduled for the same day.

In Hopkins County, four people have signed up for two at-large seats. They include Suzanne Thomas Bankston, David Black, John Reed and Brent Barclay. No incumbents filed for reelection.

In Hunt County, seven candidates will appear on the ballot for Precinct 1, Precinct 2 and an at-large post. However, Joe Bobbitt, Jim Johnson and Larry Joe Mays have been ruled ineligible. All three filed for their campaigns using petitions, but due to redistricting they did not receive the proper amount of signatures from people living in the precinct.

That leaves James Barr and Incumbent Ron Wensel for the Precinct 1 race. John Reynolds and Bill Rutherford are competing for the Precinct 3 seat. For the at-large position, Fran Janda will face John Cecil. And Duane McAbee is unopposed for the Precinct 2 seat.
