Gadhafi Troop Convoy Apparently Crosses Into Niger

DAVID GREENE, host:

And we do have some more news from Libya this morning. A large convoy of troops loyal to Moammar Gadhafi has crossed the country's southern border into Niger. The convoy's movement was reported by several news agencies, with estimates of its size ranging from little more than a dozen trucks to 250 vehicles. One report said the head of the convoy was a rebel leader from Niger who led a war for independence for his nomadic tribesmen a decade ago. When that rebellion failed, he sought refuge in Libya and was believed to be fighting on behalf of Gadhafi.

The arrival of the convoy at the border crossing has raised speculation that it might include Moammar Gadhafi, but his spokesman, Moussa Ibrahim, told Syrian television that the Libyan dictator was still in the country and in good health. Some members of Gadhafi's family, including his wife, his daughter and two of his sons, sought asylum in neighboring Algeria last month. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
