Council approves park renovations, water rates

By Scott Harvey

Commerce – Commerce residents can soon look forward to new improvements at City Park, following council's decision Tuesday to execute a professional services contract.

Money for the work comes from a recently awarded matching grant of $75,000. Mark Spencer with MHS Planning and Design has been contracted to make the renovations which include but are not limited to installation of new playground equipment, picnic tables and walkway plus botanical garden and basketball court renovation.

Anticipated completion for the work is June 1.

In addition, the city will also soon be constructing a new pavillion at the park to replace the one that was destroyed by high winds last year.

Also Tuesday, council approved an amendment to the city's water and sewer rates, effective April 1. The increases are based on a recent survey that follows a ten year, staggered rate increase plan.

Additionally, the city has agreed to move forward with submission of an application to the state for a Certified Retirement Community status. If approved, council hopes the status would make way for more promotion for the city in attracting additional residents.
