Council candidate to run unopposed after challenger departs

SULPHUR SPRINGS - A Sulphur Springs city council candidate has been ruled ineligible to run in the May 12 elections.

City Administrator Gale Roberts says that she and David Kelly have agreed that he is ineligible because he does not claim full residency within Sulphur Springs and serves as a reserve police officer. Kelly had filed for the Place 3 seat and was set to oppose Incumbent Oscar Aguilar.

“We commend Mr. Kelly for his desire to serve the public and we look forward to good things from him in the future,” Mayor Craig Johnson said.

Kelly’s departure from the race leaves Aguilar unopposed for Place 3. Mayor Johnson is also unopposed, while Place 2 Incumbent Clay Walker is facing opposition from Charles Oxford.

Early voting begins April 30 and runs through May .
