Council hears sister-city proposal, tables curfew ordinance

By Scott Harvey

Commerce – The Commerce City Council heard a presentation Tuesday about a possible sister-city program with Battambang, Cambodia.

The presentation, given by Dr. JoAnn DiGeorgio-Lutz with the A&M-Commerce Political Science Department, outlined the goals and benefits of the project. She said the program would allow students the opportunity to learn more about local government in a war-torn society/post-genocide era. The council will address whether to approve the program at its September 1 meeting.

Also Tuesday, council tabled an item regarding an amendment to the city's curfew ordinance for minors. The amended are intended to reduce truancy and encourage students to come to school, with the curfew to run from 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday when school is in session.br>
Council agreed to table the item, as they had not been able to review revisions made that include exceptions for home school students. The item will again be brought before council on September 1.
