County passes budgets

Delta County Judge Jason Murray announced the East Side steps will be closed due to repairs.

With all present the Delta County Commissioners Court accepted the General Budget for 2016 as well as for each of the precincts. The unanimous vote also approved the Maintenance & Operations tax rate of 0.609670 and Road & Bridge tax rate of 0.157490 for a total of 0.767160.

Delta County Constable Ben Snow approached the Court with his desire for an $8,000 increase in salary. Delta County citizen Glen Mariner spoke on the Constable’s behalf to the Court. No action was taken.

During the regular meeting Delta County Judge Jason Murray announced the East Side steps will be closed due to repairs. The upcoming foreclosure sale will from now on be located on the South Side steps (or the front) of the Delta County Courthouse.

County Clerk Jane Jones requested and received the approval for a purchase of a computer for the records room and a laptop for the courtroom. She received a quote of $2,425 for a new and a refurbished computer, saving the County $1,100. The funds will be provided by the Records Management budget. This purchase will not deplete funds and will help assist in keeping the County’s official records more current.

Judge Murray explained the status of the Storm Shelter Project on behalf of Delta County Emergency Management Coordinator Monty Hobbs. The Judge presented EMC Hobbs’ suggestion for the rewiring the Delta County Civic Center to help operate a generator to run the heat and lights in gym area, in needed in crisis. The funds had already previously been assigned to the project in the amount of $1,850. EMC Hobbs intends to utilize a licensed electrician trustee to help with the work. They will also be installing low amp bulbs. He offered to use $1,000 in addition from his budget to finish the project.

The Court approved the collection contracts which had no changes presented by Tax Assessor-Collector Dawn Stewart.

Judge Murray presented the 2016 County Holiday Schedule which will be the same as last year only eliminating the floating day and including Texas Independence Day on March 2.

Delta County Commissioners will meet again at 9 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 28.
