Crash kills one near Commerce

A Lamar County man was killed and a Greenville man was injured Wednesday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash near Commerce.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) was investigating whether the rainy conditions may have played a role in the reported head-on collision on State Highway 24, just after 2 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the DPS report Matthew J. Daggs, 28, of Greenville was driving a Mazda four-door sedan northbound on the highway, about three miles west of Commerce, when the vehicle crossed the center stripe and struck a southbound Ford Festiva driven by Billy J. Perry, 48, of Paris. Both cars were reported to have ended up in a bar ditch on the side of the highway.

Perry was pronounced dead on the scene, while Daggs was listed in stable condition Wednesday evening in the Hunt Regional Medical Center in Greenville.

The accident remains under investigation by the DPS.
