Commerce – Motorists on Highway 50 in Commerce will notice a change. A couple of crosswalks are up and operational as of this week. The crosswalks are a culmination of two years of cooperative effort between the City of Commerce, A&M-Commerce, and the Texas Department of Transportation. University President Keith McFarland initiated the project so students would have a safer walk across the highway.
The cost of the project was about $60,000. The two crosswalks each include solar-powered flashing lights and highly visible road markings to keep motorists aware of pedestrian traffic across the highway.
