Deadline set in cleanup of former ESCO site

By Scott Harvey

Greenville – The Environmental Protection Agency says it plans to clean up the former ESCO Manufacturing Site in the Ardis Heights area of Greenville by September, 2012.

In 2008, the site was added to the National Priorities List (Superfund Sites) after tests on the soil discovered the ground is contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) and lead.

Over 8,000 tons of contaminated soils have since been removed for the surrounding area. Another 4,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil remains inside the building.

In August, the Greenville City Council passed a resolution supporting a plan to remove the soil from within the building, and demolition of the existing structure. Higher levels of cleanup will allow for future residential or recreational uses in addition to commercial or industrial uses.

Greenville Mayor Tom Oliver said, "This project is a great example of the City of Greenville, Staff and Council, working with Hunt County Judge John Horn and the Hunt County Commissioners to effectively address a significant public safety issue."
