Dedication ceremony for AC Williams Sunday

COMMERCE - The Commerce ISD is scheduled Sunday to hold a formal dedication ceremony and open house for the new A.C. Williams Elementary School.

The public is invited to the event, which takes place from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the site, located along Culver Street/Loop 178 across from the Commerce Middle School.

Callie Hearn, daughter of the late A. C. Williams, and Wyman Williams, chairman of the citizens committee for the construction of a new school will speak at the ceremony. Students will then give tours of the facility.

The 66,000 square foot, $12.5 million facility, to house 3rd through 5th graders, broke ground in May, 2008. It includes six resource classrooms, an art room, two computer labs, a science lab, a music room and a gymnasium. The building also has a cafeteria with a stage, kitchen, life skills room, media center and an administration area.

Commerce residents overwhelmingly approved the $14 million bond package in May, 2007.

As a security measure, the administration area is set up so that visitors must enter the office before proceeding to other areas of the building. Two separate drop-off areas, one for parents and another for buses; allow traffic congestion to be minimized.
