Delta Co. Sheriff's Deputy dies after vehicle accident

Cindy Roller

Kevin Wingfield Jr., a Delta County Sheriff's Deputy, died following a one-vehicle accident near Tira Tuesday afternoon while returning home from work.

A Texas Department of Public Safety report said Wingfield, 28, died as a result of a medical event, and not the vehicle accident.

"They are saying it is due to a previous medical condition," DPS spokesman Kyle Bradford said.

Wingfield was driving a 2008 Dodge pickup truck south on FM 1536 around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday when the truck crossed the intersection of FM 71 and struck a fence, the report said.

Wingfield walked away from the accident for about 30 feet before collapsing, the report said.

An autopsy has been requested. The DPS report speculated that Wingfield suffered a seizure before death, but that has not been confirmed by doctors.

The Delta County Sheriff’s Department is assisting his family by collecting donations to help with expenses. Visitation for Wingfield will be in Commerce at Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home on Friday from 6-8 p.m. His funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Cross Trails Cowboy Church in Fairlie.
